Vetralla – Riceviamo e pubblichiamo la lettera di una coppia di turisti che si era persa nel Bosco di Sant’Angelo ed è stata salvata dai carabinieri di Vetralla –

Cara redazione di Tusciaweb, 

Sabato pomeriggio (6 novembre) il mio compagno Bogdan Gligor e io, Egle Sirtautaite, siamo arrivati al bosco di Sant’Angelo a Vetralla con l’intenzione di visitare l’eremo di San Girolamo.

Abbiamo capito di aver parcheggiato la macchina un po’ troppo lontano dal posto in questione, ma abbiamo deciso di prendere una scorciatoia attraverso un sentiero nel bosco per raggiungere la vecchia chiesa. Abbiamo camminato velocemente e siamo riusciti a visitare la chiesa; è stata un’esperienza molto interessante.

Dopo ciò, restava ancora un po’ di luce del giorno e abbiamo deciso di risalire la collina sperando di vedere la vista dal lago di Vico. Come siamo saliti, non siamo riusciti a trovare la bella vista, l’unica cosa che abbiamo trovato è stata una stazione 5G. Ci siamo guardati intorno e abbiamo deciso di iniziare a dirigerci verso la nostra macchina. Eravamo vicini a una strada forestale, percorsa dalle macchine (ne abbiamo vista passare una).

Google maps ci ha mostrato di continuare sulla strada e poi di prendere un sentiero, che ci avrebbe riportato alla macchina. Sfortunatamente è iniziato il temporale e si è fatto buio e i fulmini hanno iniziato ad avvicinarsi a noi, abbiamo iniziato a preoccuparci e a muoverci più velocemente che potessimo. La pioggia è diventata forte, è diventato tutto buio e continuando sulla strada, non potevamo vedere il sentiero che Google maps ci aveva suggerito. C’è stato un problema tecnico. 

Ci siamo trovati in una situazione per cui non potevamo continuare sulla strada perché ci stava conducendo nella direzione opposta rispetto alla macchina. L’unica opzione che avevamo era di attraversare la foresta buia, ma era troppo spaventoso ed eravamo vicino a una zona di cinghiali, che la rendeva ancora più spaventoso. Il mio compagno mi stava incoraggiando ad attraversare la foresta perché era il modo più veloce (circa un’ora camminando). Ma avevo troppa paura per rischiare di camminare nella foresta oscura, perché se i nostri telefoni si fossero spenti, saremmo stati completamente persi e incapaci di chiedere soccorso.

Il mio intuito mi ha guidato a chiedere aiuto mentre eravamo sulla strada forestale con ancora un po’ di batteria, così che fosse più facile per la polizia trovarci. Non volevo finire in mezzo alla foresta alla disperata ricerca di aiuto. Il mio compagno ha convenuto che fosse una buona idea, anche se normalmente non avremmo mai chiamato per chiedere aiuto, questa volta la situazione sembrava differente. 

Abbiamo chiamato il 112 e ci siamo messi in contatto coi carabinieri. Abbiamo atteso di essere ricollegati a un’altra linea mentre ci veniva fornito il traduttore. Tutte le persone con cui stavamo parlando al telefono erano molto gentili e utili, tuttavia stavamo esaurendo la batteria e la conversazione stava impiegando molto tempo in più,  pioveva, avevamo molto freddo e lo schermo del telefono non funzionava per l’umidità. Ci è voluto un bel po’ per fornire la nostra posizione. La linea generale è riuscita a localizzarci e si è messa in contatto con i carabinieri di Vetralla, che hanno inviato Natale Carrella e il vicebrigadiere Giuseppe Grasso a soccorrerci.

Intanto, dalla sala operativa hanno continuato a chiamarci e a tenerci informati. Abbiamo anche fornito loro la posizione live di whatsapp, così che potessero rintracciarci, ma eravamo molto spaventati perché il telefono avrebbe potuto spegnersi da un momento all’altro. Gli agenti hanno continuato a chiamare e a chiederci se sentissimo le sirene, ma non le abbiamo sentite per molto tempo. Sembra che la strada su cui ci trovavamo fosse di difficile accesso e molto lontana da dove avevamo parcheggiato.

Avevamo molto freddo, eravamo bagnati e, onestamente, nel panico. È successo inaspettatamente e ho sentito troppe storie di persone che si sono perse nella foresta. Alla fine, molto molto silenziosamente, abbiamo iniziato a sentire le sirene. All’inizio ho pensato che la mia mente si stesse prendendo gioco di me, invece erano loro. Le sirene si facevano sempre più vicine e il mio corpo ha finalmente iniziato a uscire dalla modalità panico. Quando i carabinieri si sono avvicinati, ho iniziato a piangere.

Il vicebrigadiere Giuseppe Grasso è uscito dalla macchina e ci ha abbracciato. Quello è stato il più bel gesto, perché ci sentivamo così confusi. Natale Carrella stava al volante e il suo modo di guidare era veramente fantastico. Siamo rimasti colpiti, perché ha dovuto attraversare alcune strade forestali sconnesse e lo ha fatto magistralmente.

Entrambi i carabinieri sono stati super gentili, hanno provato a conversare con noi (anche se il nostro italiano non è buono). Ci hanno chiesto se stessimo bene, se non fossimo affamati e sono stati tanto gentili da accompagnarci alla macchina. Una lunga strada! 

Non siamo riusciti a esprimere abbastanza la nostra gratitudine. Ci hanno aiutato a raggiungere la nostra casa in sicurezza e ci hanno aiutato a raggiungere la tranquillità molto più velocemente di quanto avremmo fatto senza il loro aiuto. Siamo rimasti molto colpiti dalla loro professionalità di tutti in questa situazione. A partire dalla sala operativa, al traduttore, ai carabinieri di Vetralla con gli eccezionali Natale Carrella e il vice brigadiere Grasso Giuseppe.

On Saturday evening me and my partner were rescued from a forest by your wonderful local Carabinieri Carrella Natale and the Vice Brigadiere Grasso Giuseppe.

I would really appreciate if you could write an article in order to thank them for their efforts in finding us and saving us from the storm.

On Saturday (6th of November 2021) afternoon my partner Bogdan Gligor and I (Egle Sirtautaite) arrived to a a forest Bosco di Sant’Angelo Vetralla with an intention to visit Eremo di San Girolamo.

We realised that we parked the car a bit too far from the place, but we decided to take a shortcut through the forest path to get to the ancient Church. We walked fast and we managed to see the Church, it was a very interesting experience. After that we still had some daylight left and decided to go up the hill and hopefully see the view of the lake Vico. As we went up, we couldn’t find the nice view. All we found was a 5G station.

We looked around and decided to start heading towards our car. We were next to a forest road, that was used by cars (we saw one car passing). Google maps showed us to continue on the road and then take a path, which will lead us back to the car. Unfortunately the storm started and it got really dark and the lightning started approaching us, we started worrying and moving as fast as we can. The rain became very strong, it became completely dark and as we continued on the road, we couldn’t see the path that googlemaps suggested for us. It was a glitch.

We were left in a situation where we couldn’t continue on the forest road, because it was leading us opposite direction from the car. The only option we had was to go through the dark forest, but I was too afraid, and we were right next to chingiali zone, which made it even scarier. My partner was encouraging me to go through the forest as it was the fastest way (about an hour walk). But I was too afraid to risk walking through the dark forest, because if our phones died, we would’ve been completely lost and unable to call for help.

My intuition guided me to call for help while we were on the forest road and while we had some battery left, so it would be easier for police to find us. I didn’t want to end up in the middle of the forest desperate for help. My partner agreed that maybe it is a good idea, although normally we would never call for help, this time situation felt different.

We called 112 and we were connected to the Police. Then we needed to be reconnected to another line while we were provided with the translator. All people that we were talking on the phone with were very kind and helpful, however we were running out of battery and the conversation was taking a very long time plus it was raining and we were very cold and the phone screen wasn’t working well because of the humidity. It took a very long time to provide police with out location. General police line managed to locate us and got in touch with local Carabinieri Vetralla, who have sent Carrella Natale and the Vice Brigadiere Grasso Giuseppe to rescue us.

Police officers kept on calling us and informing of their approach. We have also provided them with out whatsapp LIVE location so they can track us, but it was very scary as the phone could’ve died any minute.

Police officers kept on calling and asking if we can hear the sirens, but we couldn’t hear them for a long time. It seems that the road we were on was difficult to access and it was very far away from the car that we parked.

We were very cold, wet and honestly – in panic.
It happened unexpectedly and I have heard too many stories of people getting lost in the forest.

Eventually, very very quietly we started hearing the sirens. First I thought that it’s my mind playing tricks on me, but indeed, it was the police. The sirens were getting closer and closer and my body started to finally come out of the panic mode. Once police officers approached I started crying.

Il vicebrigadiere Giuseppe Grasso came out of the car and gave us a hug. That was the most beautiful gesture as we felt so disbalanced.

Police officer Carrella Natale was in the driver’s seat and his driving was really amazing. We were impressed, because he had to go through some rough forest roads and he did it masterfully.

Both officers were super kind, they were trying to have a nice conversation with us (even if our Italian was not very good). They asked if we are okay if we are not hungry and they were kind enough to drive us all the way back to our car. It was a long road!

We cannot express enough how grateful we are to them.
They helped us to reach our home safely and they helped us to reach relaxation and comfort much faster than we would have without their help.

We were super impressed with how professional all the police officers of Italy were in this situation. Starting from the Police call centre and the Police translator and local Police Carabinieri Vetralla with exceptional officers Carrella Natale and the Vice Brigadiere Grasso Giuseppe.

We will remember and be grateful to you forever,
